Third graders learned about life cycles and traits. They are "engineering" a 3D printed hybrid animal that inherited traits to live in a new environment.

Music*

Third grade is reading the book "How the Beat was Born". This book tells the story of DJ Kool Herc, one of the people who invented Hip Hop music. Students made up dances to his music that matched the drum beat of Hip Hop music. They also learned how DJ Kool Herc's music changed the world for the better.

Third graders also read the 23-24 California Young Reader's Medal Nominees! They learned what qualities help to determine a good book. We focused on illustrations matching words and word choice as well as author's message. Students learned about other awards like the Coretta Scott King Award, the Pura Belpré Award, the Newberry, Caldecott Award and more! Along with the enjoyment of discussing the stories, our third graders continued to develop their research skills while focusing on the local Indigenous people, the Kumeyaay. We dove into our online encyclopedias and they collected important facts about the life of these people back then and how it has changed today. We are looking forward to building upon our research next trimester!
