Where Discovery Finds Support

Through donations and volunteering, the Solana Beach Schools Foundation (SBSF) can continue to inspire kids to grow and thrive in science, technology, research, engineering, arts, math, (STREAM) and supplemental physical education.

Corporate Matching

Many San Diego companies will match your donation. To find out if your company is one of them, contact your Human Resources department. If they don’t offer corporate matching, perhaps mention past corporate participants to see if your company will consider joining the list.

Business Partners

Our charitable business partners help the SBSF fund Teachers on Special Assignment (TOSA) when state funding runs out. These TOSAs bring our schools up-to-date science and technology ideas and techniques, enabling students to conduct exciting science experiments with today’s technology.

“We don’t want to just teach our students about science. We want to teach our students how to BE scientists!” -Donna Leffel, Science TOSA

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? Please review these commonly asked ones. If you don’t see your answers here, please feel free to contact us.

What is the SBSF?

The SBSF is the Solana Beach Schools Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that raises funds for the science, art, technology, media, and supplemental PE programs not provided by the State of California. Comprising Discovery Labs, these programs are taught by instructors in partnership with classroom teachers through hands-on instruction.

Who runs the SBSF?

Our Finance, Development, Marketing/Public Relations, School Site Development, and Governance Committees, which include parents of students in our Solana Beach elementary schools and community members who dedicate their time and energy to sustaining our enriching programs.

Does my PTA contribution go toward the SBSF?

No. PTA contributions go to projects and community events at your school, while SBSF contributions pay for salaries, technology, and educational programs at your school not funded by the State of California.

Where do the SBSF funds go?

How does the SBSF distribute the contributions?

We give them to the Solana Beach School District, designating them to the school site specified by the donor to fund Discovery Labs and programs for the school year.

What is STREAM?

STREAM stands for Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. The Solana Beach School District funds the STREAM program to provide quality instruction on each of these subjects to encourage natural curiosity, well-rounded skills, and the pursuit of related professions. The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that the number of jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) will grow 17% by 2018—to 1.2 million jobs, but the market won’t have enough qualified workers to fill them.

Over three years, the SBSF will fund Discovery Labs and classrooms with an innovative STREAM curriculum in:

Science, using next-generation science standards and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum to support inquiry-based and Design Thinking instruction that helps students identify problems; research, generate, test, and refine ideas; and communicate findings.

Technology, teaching computer coding, video editing, multimedia presentations, and graphic design to help students create content, publish work, and connect globally while practicing digital citizenship. Currently, our classrooms provide iPads for students and our computer labs use up-to-date desktops and software.

Research, using Standards for the 21st-Century Learner to guide instruction that helps students ethically gain, share, apply, and create knowledge, draw conclusions, and make informed decisions.

Engineering, using PLTW curriculum that helps students apply knowledge, identify problems and unique solutions, and lead their own learning. Discover our current programs.

Arts, applying basic elements of art including color, line, shape, form, and texture to help students understand mediums and contributions from masters of art. This area also uses technology to support digital arts and photography, and Orff-Schulwerk instruments and other approaches to support music and performing arts.

Math, incorporating the recent shifts of: Greater focus on fewer topics; Coherence: Linking topics and thinking across grades; and Rigor: Pursuing conceptual understanding, procedural skills, and fluency, and application with equal intensity. This area also uses the Eight Mathematical Practice Standards.
